Fictional character biography

While still a young doctor Axel had alcohol problems, and after nearly causing the death of one of his patients he fled out in the jungle. Stumbling upon the 20th Phantom, badly wounded after a showdown, he saved the life of him, forever gaining the friendship of the Phantom.

With support from the minor treasure room, the Jungle Hospital was founded, and protected by the Phantom's good mark. Dr Axel late helped delivered the 21st Phantom, as well as the next generation - the twins Kit and Heloise

Dr Axel has also been showed to have a son Ben Axel, studying medicine as well.

Behind the scenes

Lee Falk mentioned both Bjorn ("Attack of the Witchmen"), and Thor ("The Shaman"), as being the first name of the doctor. Team Fantomen has his first name to be Thorbjorn, and regards him as being of Scandinavian descent.

In the 1970's the the color of Dr. Axel's skin changed temporarily in the newspaper strip. Otherwise known to be Caucasian he was depicted as a black man between 1971 and 1977. Team Fantomen followed this change in their stories and continued this into the 1980's.

Dr Axel is based upon real-life doctor Albert Schweitzer.
